What is an essential oil ?
An essential oïl Is a concentrated and highly aromatic liquid extract, generally obtained through steam distillation from plants. This process concentrates the volatile active ingredients.
How are they extracted?
Essential Oil Extraction Methods
Essential oil extraction is a precise engineering process that transforms whole plants into pure, concentrated drops. There are two fundamental traditional methods that we rely on to guarantee the highest quality:
1. Steam Distillation
This is the most widespread method, suitable for the majority of plants such as lavender, tea tree, mint, and rose.
How does the process work?
- Plant material setup: The leaves, flowers, or roots are placed into the still.
- Steam passage: Hot, high-pressure steam passes through the plant material.
- Release: The hot steam ruptures the microscopic secretory pockets hidden at the heart of the plant, releasing the aromatic compounds.
- Condensation: The oil-laden steam is directed toward a cooling tube, where it condenses and turns back into a liquid.
- Separation: Since oil is lighter than water and does not mix with it, the pure essential oil separates at the surface, sitting above the distilled water—often called “rose water” or “orange blossom water” depending on the plant—which is collected at the bottom.
2. Cold expression or mechanical extraction
This method is reserved exclusively for the citrus family, such as lemon, orange, and mandarin. Why citrus in particular? Because the secretory pockets containing the essential oil are visible within the soft outer peel, or “zest,” and require no heat to be extracted. We mechanically grate and press the fresh peels without any heat or steam. This pressure allows us to extract the oils in a 100% natural and pure way, while preserving their original, fresh scent.

The Golden Rule for Use
Because they are highly concentrated, it is forbidden to apply them directly to the skin without diluting them.
The Correct Method: Always mix a few drops with a cold-pressed carrier oil, such as argan oil or sweet almond oil, before applying.
Not recommended for pregnant women, children under 3 years old, and people with epilepsy without medical advice. Do a patch test on the inside of your elbow.
