Everything you need to know about sun protection: The complete guide to preserving your skin naturally
As the sunny days approach or during sun exposure, protecting your skin becomes an essential routine. Beyond aesthetics, it is a true health issue to prevent premature skin aging and UV damage.
At YAC SHOP, we believe in healthy and respectful beauty. Let’s review the different types of sun protection and the importance of adopting the right habits.
90% of skin aging comes from the sun: Are you really well protected?
Did you know? Even behind a window, in a car, or on a cloudy day, 80% of UV rays pass through and accelerate your skin’s aging.
Every summer (and throughout the year), the same question returns: does your sunscreen really protect you, or does it just give you a false sense of security?
1. Why is it essential to protect yourself from the sun?
The sun’s rays emit two types of UV rays harmful to the epidermis:
- UVA: Present all year round (even on cloudy days), they penetrate deep into the skin. They are responsible for skin aging (wrinkles, spots) and promote oxidative stress.
- UVB: Responsible for sunburns, they act on the surface and stimulate melanin production (tanning), but can damage the DNA of skin cells.
2. The different types of sun protection
There are several families of sun filters on the market. It is important to choose them carefully according to your skin’s sensitivity:
A. Mineral Filters (or Inorganic Filters)
Composed of natural minerals (such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide), they act as a physical shield on the skin’s surface.
- The principle: They reflect UV rays like a mirror.
- The advantages: Immediate effectiveness upon application, very high tolerance, perfect for sensitive skin, children, and environmentally friendly (especially marine life).
B. Chemical Filters (or Organic Filters)
Composed of synthetic molecules.
- The principle: They penetrate the epidermis to absorb the energy of UV rays and transform it into heat.
- The advantages: Often lighter textures, invisible and easy to spread.
- Disadvantages: A delay of about 20 minutes is necessary before they become active, and they can sometimes cause irritation on reactive skin.
C. Natural Protection and Vegetable Oils
While vegetable oils (such as Prickly pear seed oil or Argan oil) possess wonderful antioxidant, nourishing, and repairing properties to prepare the skin and soothe it after exposure, they do not replace a true certified sunscreen during intense exposure. However, they fit perfectly into a global natural “After-Sun” care routine.

3. How to choose your SPF (Sun Protection Factor)?
The SPF indicates the level of protection against UVB rays:
- SPF 15 to 25: Medium protection, suitable for matte or already tanned skin for moderate exposure.
- SPF 30 to 50: High protection, recommended for fair skin or prolonged exposure.
- SPF 50+: Very high protection, essential for very fair, sensitive skin, or for children.
True or False: The 3 biggest myths that damage your skin
Before choosing your product, let’s eliminate the most dangerous preconceived notions:
- “If I am already tanned, I no longer need sunscreen.” ❌ FALSE! Tanning is a defense reaction of the skin. Even when tanned, your skin undergoes the attack of UVA rays that deeply destroy collagen.
- “An SPF 50 protects twice as much as an SPF 25.” ❌ FALSE! An SPF 15 blocks ~93% of UVB, an SPF 30 blocks ~97%, and an SPF 50 blocks ~98%. The difference lies mainly in the duration and quality of the barrier, not just the number!
- “Shade and clouds protect me 100%.” ❌ FALSE! Sand reflects up to 15% of UV rays, water 10%, and refraction through clouds lets through the majority of UVA rays responsible for dark spots.
4. Best practices for responsible exposure
- Reapply: Every two hours, as well as after each swim or intense sports session.
- Avoid peak hours: Do not expose yourself between 12 PM and 4 PM, when UV rays are most aggressive.
- Think of forgotten areas: Ears, back of the neck, top of the foot, and lips.
- Nourish your skin after the sun: Generously moisturize your skin in the evening with rich, natural treatments to help it regenerate.
